Transform Your Backyard Cabana Ideas Into A Stunning Reality

backyard cabana

backyard cabana ideasMany homeowners are discovering the advantages of installing roofed outdoor structures in their yards. By installing this element, you can add function and elegance while extending your living space. Perhaps, you’ve already been researching backyard cabana ideas. Landscape Solutions & Designs, Inc. can take those ideas and turn them into reality.

Turn Your Backyard Into An Asset With An Outdoor Shade Structure

When you install a backyard structure, you’ll elevate your outdoor experience. Protected from the burning rays of the sun and other weather elements, you can spend more time enjoying nature. Additionally, backyard cabanas offer many great benefits:

1. Aesthetics

Everyone wants a beautiful, outdoor space to entertain or just relax. An outdoor structure can be an eye-catching, focal point to any yard.

2. Function/Additional Living Space

North Carolina summers can be brutally hot. However, a roofed outdoor structure can offer much-needed shade. Just add some furniture underneath and you have more living space.

3. Value

An outdoor shade structure is a sought-after amenity. With more living space, you increase the value of your property.

4. Privacy

Whether you want to relax or entertain, no one wants the prying eyes of neighbors spying on them. A roofed outdoor structure can provide privacy and seclusion.

5. Creates A Zone

Rather than a large, empty space, many homeowners create different areas in their backyards. An outdoor structure easily delineates a specific space for an outdoor room.

Types Of Outdoor Shade Structures

When deciding on an outdoor structure, many homeowners become confused over some of the different types:

  • Pergolas
  • Gazebos
  • Pavilions
  • Cabanas

While very similar, each structure is slightly different from the others. Typically, a pergola has a latticed roof with open sides offering gently filtered sunlight. With a solid roof, a gazebo offers more protection from the elements.

Comparatively, a pavilion is very similar to a gazebo. Both are open with a solid roof. However, a gazebo has a floor and is usually smaller with an octagonal or square shape. Typically, a pavilion is long and rectangular providing shade to a patio below. Finally, a cabana is a free-standing, closed-roof structure with one open side and 3 walls. Although most people associate these structures with a pool, cabanas have become a stand-alone element.

Usually, choosing the best outdoor shade structure for your backyard involves deciding on your needs and budget. A professional landscaper will ask you several important questions to determine the best solution:

  • Are you planning on entertaining a lot? Large or small gatherings?
  • Do you need a place to prepare food?
  • How much shade do you want?
  • What about amenities that require electricity?
  • Will you need a quiet retreat?

A Few Backyard Cabana Ideas

Today’s homebuyers are demanding well-designed outdoor spaces, especially areas covered by a roof. Cabanas are a versatile element that you can use to create your perfect outdoor area. Whether you want a small, simple structure or an elaborate space, a professional can bring your dreams to life.

Here are just a few great backyard cabana ideas:

  • Guest house
  • Outdoor kitchen
  • Dining area
  • Home office
  • Fitness area
  • Backyard retreat
  • Sports bar with television
  • Fireplace room

FAQs About Backyard Cabanas

Searching for a professional to bring your backyard cabana ideas to life? Landscape Solutions & Design, Inc. has been turning boring backyards into dream paradises since 2005. Below, we answer some common questions about backyard cabanas.

What’s The Perfect Size For A Cabana?

Generally, cabanas can be just about any size from 5 by 5 to 40 by 60 feet. However, the most common dimensions are 10 by 12 feet. These measurements are just slightly smaller than the average size bedroom.

Are There Different Types Of Cabanas?

While you’ll find varying styles, there are only 2 different types of cabanas. A temporary cabana is non-permanent and can be set up and taken down. Generally, manufacturers use powder-coated steel or aluminum for strength and weather-resistant detachable curtains.

Whereas a permanent cabana construction is very similar to building a house. Of course, you’ll want to choose materials that are long-lasting and durable especially if you’re installing plumbing and electricity. Thus, brick, stone, wood, and vinyl are all good choices.

How Much Should I Budget For a Backyard Cabana?

Cabanas range from tiny, simple structures to large, luxurious buildings. Your costs will vary based on the size, materials, and features you choose.

However, Landscape Solutions makes it easy for you to get the structure of your dreams. We offer a free, no-obligation consultation during which we discuss your needs and budget. Then, we’ll design a backyard cabana perfect for you.

You’ll Love These Design Ideas for Concrete Stamps

Design Ideas for Concrete Stamps

Design Ideas for Concrete StampsHere at Landscape Solutions & Design Inc., we take pride in helping our customers create the landscape design of their dreams. When most people think about “landscapes” they think about their lawn, trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants. However, it also includes your hardscapes, which are the non-living elements of your outdoor living space, such as patios and walkways. One way to give your hardscapes a unique look is to consider our design ideas for concrete stamps.

What are Concrete Stamps?

When building hardscapes, you have several options for materials including slate, brick, wood, flagstone, and tile. However, one of the most durable and cost-effective options is to use concrete. The problem? Well, concrete isn’t exactly the most visually appealing if you are trying to spruce up your landscape.

The solution is to use concrete stamps. We start by coloring the concrete with a base color and, if applicable, an accent or secondary color. Then, we use large stamps to create a texture within the concrete that mimics other materials.

Not only are concrete surfaces usually a less expensive option, but they also typically last longer. Outdoor surfaces get a lot of abuse; we walk and even drive on them in some cases, and they are exposed to the elements. Many other materials, such as stone, can be difficult to repair. Concrete does have to be maintained properly to look its best, but is often the better choice for high-traffic areas. It can even increase your home value.

Available Concrete Stamp Designs

We offer a wide range of concrete stamp designs to replicate the look of just about any building material. Additionally, we can use multiple different stamps to give your hardscapes the exact look you want. For example, we could stamp your patio to look like large tiles surrounded by bricks, while making your walkways look like slate or another kind of rock.

While stamps that mimic natural stone are the most popular option, this isn’t the only type of design we can accomplish for you. Here are a few other design ideas for concrete stamps you can consider:

  • Seamless designs, which apply a texture to the concrete without joints
  • Bricks, which give you the look of brick pavers
  • Wood, if you want the concrete to have a wood grain pattern

We also offer a huge range of colors for your stamped concrete patio or other hardscapes. In most cases, we start with a base color and then apply accent colors, often by hand to specific areas which will give you a very realistic final result. However, one advantage to using concrete is that you can choose any color you like, even if it is not normally found in nature. It’s completely up to you.

Where to Apply Stamped Concrete: Unique Design Ideas for Concrete Stamps

Most of the time, we talk about concrete stamps in relation to patios and walkways. However, we can apply stamps to any hardscape project where concrete is a viable material option, including vertical building projects. Here are a few design ideas you can consider:

If you aren’t sure what will look best, don’t worry. As we design your new landscape, we’ll use 3D design tools that give you a real sense of how the final result will look. Our realistic design presentation can show you the stamped concrete from multiple angles and in different lighting. It’s an easy way to visualize the design so you can feel confident that you’re getting the look you want.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stamping Concrete

We’d love to answer any questions you have about concrete stamp designs. Here are a few FAQs to get you started:

How long does it take to stamp concrete?

Depending on the effect we want to create, we’ll allow the concrete to harden slightly before stamping. However, this is all done the same day, while the concrete is still wet.

Is this a project I can do myself?

We do not recommend taking on this project unless you are extremely experienced with outdoor concrete installation. You need to know how to properly prepare the area so it doesn’t sink and cause cracks, how to build a structure to contain the concrete, how to properly mix it, and of course, how to get the stamped impressions you desire. This all takes experience and training to get right. It’s easy to mess up, which is why we oversee all stamping projects rather than subcontract the work to a less experienced, untrained crew.

Additionally, you need the right tools. Concrete stamps can be expensive, and you probably need more than one unless you are stamping a very small area. Don’t forget the dyes and sealers! While you may be temped to take on this project, it is not a DIY job for beginners.

What kind of maintenance do I need to do to stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete can develop cracks and fading over time, if it is not properly maintained. We recommend resealing it every few years, and reapplying dye as needed. If you need help maintaining your stamped concrete, we can include this work in your maintenance plan.

Is stamped concrete better than installing pavers?

All materials have pros and cons. The cost of stamped concrete can vary greatly depending on the complexity of your design. Concrete pavers might be a less expensive option in some cases, while in other cases concrete is more cost-effective. In addition, pavers simply work better as a long-lasting choice for some surfaces, while in other areas concrete makes more sense. When we design your hardscape, we’ll talk to you about all the material options, along with cost, durability, and aesthetics, so you can make the best choice for your landscape design. Concrete Pavers Backyard Ideas – Discover The Advantages

pavers backyard

pavers backyardRenovating your backyard has never been more popular. From sprucing up overgrown areas to installing hardscapes, Americans are turning their yards into their private retreat. Hardscapes, including walkways and patios, help define areas while allowing you to express your personality and creativity. When looking for concrete pavers backyard ideas, turn to Landscape Solutions & Design, Inc. for inspiration.

Some Concrete Paver Design Ideas

Generally, many homeowners choose concrete pavers because they make an excellent outdoor flooring option. Sometimes called interlocking, pavers offer multi-functional usage:

  • Patio
  • Steps
  • Walkway
  • Driveway
  • Retaining wall
  • Firepit
  • Pool deck
  • Garden border
  • Grill platform

Often, homeowners choose materials for the price and function. Yet, picking pavers allows you to also beautify the area increasing your property value. This material is ideal for use in many outdoor projects due to its unique qualities.

Top 6 Reasons To Use Concrete Pavers

Whether you’re planning on adding an outdoor room or remodeling an existing space, pavers offer many great advantages.

1. Low Cost

When compared to brick or natural stone, concrete pavers are more economical. With pre-cut pieces, interlocking pavers require less labor to install. Plus, pavers can manage freeze/thaw cycles better than poured concrete making them less likely to crack. This equates to less costly repairs.

2. Easy Maintenance

Foot traffic exposes patios and walkways to dirt and wear. So, no matter which type of material you choose, you will need to perform some maintenance. However, when compared to other options, interlocking pavers require the least amount of upkeep.

3. Versatility

Concrete pavers are unsurpassed in their versatility. Available in many colors, shapes, and textures, you have nearly unlimited design options. Moreover, you can use pavers to build almost any type of hardscape.

4. Repairs are Easy

Often, homeowners choose poured concrete because its upfront cost is cheaper. However, over time, concrete can crack requiring complete replacement and a sizable investment. Whereas individual damaged pavers are easy to replace costing you a lot less money.

5. Durability

Generally, the concrete paver manufacturer will offer a lifetime guarantee on their product. Poured concrete cannot offer the same protection. With a density 3 times that of poured concrete, a paver project can last more than twice as long.

6. Boost Curb Appeal (create interest/focal point)

Typically, poured concrete is boring with its flat, gray appearance. Although you can stamp concrete, this method can be much more costly than simply using pavers. With the various colors, shapes, and textures of pavers, you can create a seemingly endless array of patterns.

A Good Foundation Is Critical

Search the internet and you’ll find many tutorials showing how easy it is to install interlocking pavers. However, hiring a professional to handle your project will save you time and possibly money.

One of the most critical aspects of installing a hardscape is the foundation. Mess it up and your project will need redoing in a few short years.

If you hire a professional, you’ll avoid some common DIY mistakes:

  • Digging too shallow a base
  • Failing to compact the gravel
  • Improperly installing the sand
  • Leaving too much space between the pavers

When done correctly, a paver hardscape can add value to your home. How much depends on your market as well as the size and scope of your project.

Plus, using a professional can mean the difference between a conventional patio or a stunning focal point. As a member of the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, we have access to a vast resource of information. Thus, we can create a paver hardscape unique to your personality and landscape.

How Much Will A Concrete Paver Project Cost?

Usually, homeowners need to know the cost of a project before committing to it. However, a professional landscaper needs to understand the scope and size of your plan.

Even if you discuss exactly what you want over the telephone, a landscaper will need to inspect your property. The landscaper needs to examine your soil type for its water holding capacity and drainage.

That’s why Landscape Solutions offers a free no-obligation quote for every project. Our owner, Kostas Menegakis, meets with each new client to discuss the plans and inspect the property. Afterward, you’ll receive a detailed quote covering everything needed for your landscaping element.

What’s The Time Frame For Installation?

Back Yard Fire Pit Ideas

Did you know fire pits are a type of hardscape? Hardscapes are a type of landscaping that utilizes stone and other hard materials. Other popular hardscapes include outdoor fireplaces, retaining walls, water features, and patios. These types of elements are increasing in popularity due to their ability to make outdoor living more enjoyable at home.

There are five variables to consider when thinking about back yard fire pit ideas. Those are:

  • Location
  • Design
  • Materials
  • Lighting
  • Seating

Location

Ask yourself, where is the best place to put a fire pit in my back yard? First off, you need an area that is free from debris and potential fire hazards. For example, you do not want a fire pit in the middle of a landscaping area filled with dry, and very flammable, pine needs. So, select an area of your yard or patio that is free from these hazards.

If you have a patio or are putting one in your plans, this might be a great place to consider putting a fire pit. It’s close enough to the house that it’s easy to go back and forth. However, if you want to put it further in your yard that works as well to keep it a separate entertaining space.

Design

Theoretically you could create a fire pit in any shape, but logistically the best shape is typically a ring. This allows for easy access to the fire from all angles. It is also an ideal shape for seating and gatherings.

Materials

There are a variety of materials for fire pits at homeowners or business owners disposal. However, the two most commonly used ones are concrete and brick. Each can withstand fire safely as the outer ring making them ideal materials for a fire pit. Both are also visually appealing when applied to a sleek fire pit design.

Lighting

While fire pits obviously give off light from the fire there are other lighting options to consider. For example, if the fire pit is in the yard, then you’ll want a lighted walkway to the area. This will help everyone avoid tripping or stepping on dog waste or snakes in the yard on the way to the fire pit. If the fire pit is on the patio, then you’ll want patio lighting that doesn’t take away from the fire light.

Seating

Finally, you will need to consider seating for your fire pit. What good is a beautiful and warm fire pit if people can’t sit around it? You’ll need to consider the seating in your design as well as decide what type of seats you’d like to use. Some people opt for simple lawn chairs and others invest in sturdier chairs.

Frequently Asked Questions on Fire Pits

Every landscaping project is different at Landscape Solutions & Design. Therefore, we do not have one set cost for anything, including fire pits. Below are a few factors that impact final cost of a fire pit:

  • Materials used
  • Size of fire pit
  • Additional landscaping services

Once we discuss with you your needs, we will provide a detailed estimate that provides more specific pricing for your fire pit and any other landscaping services you’d like us to provide for you.

What do you put under a fire pit in your yard?

We Know How to Install Irrigation Systems for a Perfect Lawn

How to Install Irrigation Systems

How to Install Irrigation Systems

At Landscape Solutions & Design, we have training in how to install irrigation systems. This is typically not a project you want to do yourself. By hiring a professional, you can avoid some of the major issues that homeowners experience with irrigation. Here are the top seven reasons you should hire an experienced irrigation team rather than doing it yourself.

Your Time is Valuable

First and foremost, installing an irrigation system is not fast, especially if you’ve never done it before. We have experience installing both low-flow and high-flow systems. Low-flow options include drip irrigation systems and micro sprayers. High-flow options include sprinkler systems and soaker hoses.

When you work with the Landscape Solutions & Design team, you don’t have to worry that you may choose the wrong option for your property. Researching every drip irrigation system alone can be a daunting task. Add in the lawn sprinkler systems, soaker hose systems, and other irrigation options… let’s just say that you can spend your entire weekend just doing research!

That’s time you could spend with your family or enjoying hobbies. Do you really want to give up several days off? Your lawn irrigation is important, but professionals like our team can get the job done so you can spend your time doing more important things.

Let Us Take on This Dirty, Wet Job!

Not only is it time consuming to install an irrigation system, but it is hard work. This is a dirty, wet job that can be back-breaking. If your soil is rocky, it will be even harder.

Our team can take on the manual labor so you don’t have to. Since we have experience with these systems, we can get the job done faster without mistakes. Of course, it helps to have experience and the latest equipment!

While we’re at it, we can take on all your other dirty, back-breaking landscaping work! Our team takes on both residential and commercial landscaping services including the following:

Basically, if it involves your outdoor property, we can help! If you need any of these services along with irrigation system installation, we would be happy to give you a bundled price quote.

We Can Install Your Irrigation System Safely

Did you know there could be gas lines, electrical wires, old wells, water pipes, sewage tanks, and more buried in your yard? During irrigation installation, you’ll need to dig trenches. However, if you dig in the wrong spot, you could be putting your personal safety or property at risk.

We have experience working with the city to figure out where they have buried gas lines, water pipes, etc.. When we are installing your lawn irrigation system, we’ll make sure it doesn’t disturb anything already buried in your lawn. We also carefully note where your underground irrigation system is located so you have this information for any future digging.

Keep in mind that you may need a building permit to install an irrigation system. It depends on the type of system and your city’s guidelines. If you need a permit, our team can apply for this for you before irrigation installation. We’ll make sure that your job has the city’s approval, so we can finish quickly. We also check which type of backflow prevention system your city requires, so we can properly install it.

It’s Hard to Install an Irrigation System without Professional Tools and Experience

Speaking of digging, if you don’t have professional tools, irrigation installation can be next to impossible. You have to dig trenches of various depths, in the right locations to properly irrigate your lawn. It’s hard to do this precisely with a simple garden shovel.

Before you start, it’s also important that you understand not only how to install irrigation systems, but which systems will work for your lawn in the first place. Before you purchase an irrigation system, you need to know:

  • Water Pressure (PSI)
  • Well Pump Size or Water Meter
  • Flow of Water (Gallons Per Minute/Flow Rate)
  • Service Line Size

You can’t purchase the right components without these measurements. Additionally, you need to know the what kind of backflow prevention you need. As noted previously, your city will likely require a specific kind of backflow preventer, which is important for any kind of lawn irrigation system.

We Understand How to Install Irrigation Systems that Don’t Leak

Both a residential irrigation system and a commercial irrigation system will have several components. Depending on the type of system, this will include a control valve, hose, rain sensor, spray heads, sprinkler heads, pipes, drip line, timers, risers, manual controls, fittings, and more. You have to be confident installing all components properly or your system will be susceptible to leaking.

At first, it may seem like a small leak wouldn’t be a huge issue. After all, an irrigation system is supposed to water your lawn, right?

However, a leak can have two major negative consequences. First, even though an irrigation system will water your lawn, you might want to set up timers so that certain plants don’t get too much water. More importantly, though, little leaks can lead to big water bills. That water is draining away, but you’ll be paying for it nonetheless.

Here at Landscape Solutions & Design, we have experience installing all irrigation system components properly. Then, we’ll test the system to ensure there are no leaks.

Our Landscape Team Can Optimize Your Irrigation

When you install an irrigation system, you’ll need to ensure that the water reaches all areas of your landscape properly. We’ll recommend the best type of irrigation system for your lawn and garden. Additionally, we’ll ensure proper placements of hoses, pipes, and sprinkler heads.

So, which type of irrigation system is right for you? Here are a few things to consider:

  • The most common type of irrigation is a sprinkler system. They typically are best for applying water evenly across large areas of grass or ground. In addition to normal sprinklers that you see in lawns and at places like golf courses, they also make micro sprayers which mist smaller areas.
  • A drip irrigation system allows for slow application of water in specific areas through a drip system of pipes or hoses that lay on the ground. They work best to water flower and shrub beds, gardens, and anywhere you need control over exactly how much water your soil requires.

Although sprinkler systems and drip irrigation systems are the two most common types of irrigation systems, there are also deep root systems and bubblers. Most homes and businesses here in North Carolina don’t need deep root systems, which are best for watering trees in drought areas. You probably don’t need a bubbler either, as these systems are meant to flood an area with a deep soak of water. One of our team members can take a look at your landscape to see which type of irrigation is best for you.

We can also set up your irrigation system so you don’t have to manually control the watering schedule for your lawn. After all, if you wanted to manually water your lawn, you would do so with a hose. With a schedule, you can truly set it and forget it.

Our team has experience with a wide variety of plants and grass types. Some plants and grasses need more water than others. We can help you determine exactly how to set up your schedule for optimal lawn care.

We Make Sure Each Sprinkler Head is Installed Correctly

Most homeowners and businesses choose a sprinkler irrigation system. They work well to water lawns and are cost-effective. However, with a sprinkler system, you have to make sure to install each sprinkler head properly. Without correct installation, you could have a number of problems:

  • The sprinkler heads stick up too high, creating a tripping hazard for your family or customers.
  • Your landscape’s watering is ineffective, because the sprinkler heads are shooting water to areas that don’t need it, such as on the pavement.
  • Lawn mowers or other lawn care equipment could damage the sprinkler heads.

We’ll place the sprinkler heads properly to optimize your irrigation, while also keeping your family and irrigation system safe. We test everything in your lawn sprinkler system to make sure it is working properly.

When you decide to hire professionals to handle your irrigation and other landscaping and hardscaping needs, how do you find a reliable company? With so many lawncare companies out there, why should you hire Landscape Solutions & Design?

Lawn Hydration Techniques for Hot & Dry Summers

Landscape-Maintenance-Plans-Keep-Your-Property-Picture-Perfect-Year-Round

It’s getting hot and steamy out there and summer isn’t even here yet. Now’s a great time therefore to organize your lawn hydration system(s) to ensure your lawn remains lush and hydrated throughout the hot summer. This blog offers some lawn hydration techniques to keep your lawn looking lush, green and well looked after, all summer long.

Fixed Sprinklers

The fixed sprinkler system may be traditional, but it still works just fine. Fixed sprinklers release water in all directions, simultaneously. The fixed sprinkler works great therefore for smaller lawns with shrubbery.

Impact sprinklers

These offer more of a jet of water, with some interruption in between each release. Impact sprinklers closely mimic rainfall. Because impact sprinklers release a lot of water, they are better suited to larger lawns. Impact sprinklers also don’t tend to clog as much as smaller sprinklers.

Drip Hoses

Drip hoses are the environmentally friendly option for lawn hydration. Drip hoses work by releasing water through holes in the hose and go directly to the grass roots. The water pressure is low, making this attractive to those under neighborhood watering restrictions.

In-ground sprinklers

In-ground sprinklers may cost more, but they look gorgeous. There are a large variety of in-ground sprinklers available including simple layouts with fixed times to more fancy devices.

Some other things to keep in mind

  • We suggest hydrating your lawn in the morning versus the afternoon for better saturation.
  • If watering your yard is restricted in your neighborhood, rest assured that most varieties of turf may not require any irrigation for up to four weeks.
  • If your lawn is well-maintained, it only requires 1 inch of watering per week in order to remain green.  We suggest therefore activating your sprinkler system every 3 to 4 days for a longer period versus shorter periods every day.

5 Interesting Rock Landscaping Ideas for your Home or Business

Commercial-Landscape-Maintenance

Incorporating rock landscaping into the grounds of your home or business is a fabulous move. Not only does your yard or grounds look regal, you also create an elegant oasis, offering visitors to your outdoor space a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of life. Adding rock landscaping to your property also adds to its value and by adding rock, you are removing considerable yard work for yourself. More rock landscaping means less lawn to mow! Rock landscaping comes in a variety of forms and styles and at Landscapes R Us we have plenty of experts to offer you guidance and help. We also recommend spending some time studying your available yard/garden space and seeing what can and cannot be done, before even getting started. This article offers five interesting rock landscaping ideas to consider for your next spring project.

1. Create a rock waterfall

One popular idea our customers love is creating a rock waterfall. When creating a rock waterfall in your yard or garden we suggest trying to imitate nature as best possible. Spend time in nature listening and watching how a waterfall operates in its raw, natural form, then, replicate this in your garden. We suggest incorporating a variety of boulder sizes. Create twists and turns in the waterfall.

2. Create a dog house

Building a doghouse, sort of an igloo shaped structure with stone, is a great way to use any leftover rock and a great way to offer shade to your pet. A doghouse also looks pretty, and rustic. Create the structure with plastic first, then, mount your rocks over the form. Once complete, plant some vine to climb over the house. Voila! You have an attractive, rock made shelter for your pooch!

3. Add stone to your fireplace

Another great rock landscaping idea is to add rock to your existing outdoor structures such as your fireplace. Simply secure rock on the exterior of the fireplace. Try being mindful of the natural flow of the rock, making the formation and design replicate nature.

4. Make a rock garden

Slopes can be tricky to navigate in any garden, but rocks can make a slope look more rustic and less bland. Another incentive for adding rocks to your slope is rocks prevent erosion and allow your plants to be anchored, therefore accelerating and helping their growth. When placing your rocks on your slope, we suggest digging a hole larger than the rock. Place the rock in the hole, then fill in the dirt.

5. Build a wall

Another interesting rock landscaping project is building a wall. Walls don’t have to be simple or boring. When done well, rock walls can look stunning! Please keep in mind however you will need a building permit if your wall exceeds four feet. We suggest adding steps up to the wall, then, add a vine or two. Beautiful! And yet so affordable and simple!

Common Landscaping Mistakes

Mowing-and-Trimming

Mowing-and-Trimming

Homeowners can add considerable value to their home with landscaping.  You wouldn’t think so, but anecdotally and also officially from experts, the word is adding even trees to your front yard can add value to your property and to the homes around you.

But before leaping in you should also know while landscaping is joyous it is also arduous and tricky requiring much planning and research ahead of time.  There are plenty of common mistakes you could inadvertently make when trying to beautify your property.  Here are some of the common pitfalls we hear about:

Don’t Leap in without a Landscaping Plan

Before moving one rock or planting one tree, it absolutely pays off to hire a contracted landscaper working in Greensboro, Winston Salem or High Point, North Carolina to offer you their expert landscaping advice.  These experts will know which plants, shrubs and trees grow best here.  They’ll know how high trees will grow and how much shade they will offer.  They’ll also ensure the layout is not only pragmatic from a growth and landscaping perspective, the layout will be pretty and calming to the eye.  With a landscaping plan you can also take on something more ambitious, such as installing walls, gazebos and paving.  An expert landscaper may come up with ideas that never occur to you otherwise.

Plant What Thrives in North Carolina

Whether you research this alone or with your landscaping expert, always consult with experts to ensure the plants, shrubs, flowers and trees you plant will thrive in this North Carolina climate.  Many homeowners like to make their garden a surrogate for the places they left behind – but this is a common mistake.  Soil types may be different here versus other states and countries, rainfall is higher here than elsewhere along with the severity of wind, lightning and thunder.

Don’t Default to Having a Lawn Just Because Your Neighbors Do

While lawns are ubiquitous in Greensboro, Winston Salem and High Point neighborhoods, not every homeowner or renter needs one.  If you don’t feel motivated to mow and irrigate your lawn frequently, then consider other landscaping options.

Work with What You Have

If your yard is rocky then incorporate rocks within your landscaping plan rather than eradicate them all.  Don’t try reinventing the wheel — you will exhaust yourself and deplete your resources fast.

Try Thinking Seasonally

As you develop your landscaping plan try thinking year around to ensure you have brightness and growth throughout the year, not just summer and spring.

Be Practical

Always be practical in your landscaping decisions rather than just think about the aesthetic.  Bottom line: your landscaping goal is to design an oasis in which you can relax and enjoy.  Anything requiring massive maintenance on your part can take away some of the joy of a beautiful landscape.

Invest in Your Tools Early on

One of the biggest time wasters when it comes to landscaping is returning to your home improvement store to restock products or items that are depleted, or to buy items you thought you already owned.  Before getting started on your landscaping, take stock of what you possess and make a big shopping trip to purchase all you need.
