3 Design Tips for Outdoor Kitchens to Create Your Dream Space

Outdoor-Kitchen_Outdoor kitchens are some of our favorite projects to complete here at Landscape Solutions & Design, in part because we love to see the look on our customers’ faces when they see their new yard, complete with a dream entertaining space. No more dinky grill you have to man while the party is inside! We can add cooktops, sinks, prep areas, refrigerators, and more to your outdoor living space to create the ultimate kitchen under the sky! If you want the best outdoor kitchen possible, here are a few tips we recommend, based on our experience in this area.

Tip #1: Think about where elements are located in relation to one another.

Inside your home, we would recommend that your sink is near your dishwasher, that you have counter space beside your stovetop, etc. Outdoor kitchens are no different. Spend some time thinking about how you use your current kitchen. Your second kitchen should be laid out in a way that makes sense for you.

Tip #2: Go for low-maintenance surface options for outdoor kitchens.

Outdoor kitchens are exposed to the elements, which means that surfaces will have to deal with water (including snow and ice), wind, sun, and hot/cold temperatures. Not every surface option available for indoor kitchens will be good for outdoor kitchens, and in fact, we strongly recommend that you avoid certain materials. When in doubt, always go for the low-maintenance option. Most homeowners tend to use their outdoor kitchens while entertaining, and you don’t want to be cleaning for an extended period of time when you could be enjoying the company of your guests.

Tip #3: Think about how you can extend the usability of your outdoor kitchen.

During the winter months, you probably won’t use your outdoor kitchen as much. However, there’s no reason you have to hang up your grilling apron on Labor Day. You can install heaters, shaded areas, and more to make sure your kitchen stays usable as long as possible during the year. Lighting is also important. Adding some strong task lighting to prep areas, as well as some softer ambient lighting means that you’ll be able to continue enjoying your outdoor kitchen even after the sun goes down.
In addition, think about how you can make it more fun to be in your outdoor kitchen. Can you incorporate speakers to play music? Does adding an outdoor television make sense? How is line of sight – will you still be able to interact with the party while you’re grilling burgers for everyone? The more you actually enjoy being in the kitchen, the more you will use your outdoor kitchen.
All of the options for outdoor kitchens can be extremely overwhelming. Luckily, you have a team of experts on your side!
